Frequently Asked Questions | Defend-it Fingerprinting Services

Find answers to common questions about our fingerprinting services, appointments, costs, and processes.

What type of identification is required for fingerprinting?
We require two (2) forms of government issued identification where at least one has your picture on it. The identification can be Canadian issued or from other countries. Photocopies of the identification is not permitted as we need to view and document the original.
How do I verify the status of my fingerprint submission?
All criminal record verifications are processed in the order in which they are received. The RCMP will not expedite any submission. You will receive email confirmation from Defend-it Fingerprinting Services with a DCN reference number confirming your fingerprints were successfully submitted. Wait times: 1 to 4 weeks if submitted electronically and you do NOT have a criminal holding. If you have ever been fingerprinted by a police agency in Canada (regardless of outcome), your application may take in excess of 120 days. For status inquiries after the wait time has passed, email ccrtis-scictr@rcmp-grc.gc.ca with: your full name, date of birth, application type, submission date, DCN number, and daytime phone number.
Can I put a rush for my results from the RCMP?
All criminal record verifications are processed in the order in which they are received. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will not expedite any submission because this will adversely affect all other individuals awaiting their results.
Why is my submission taking longer than 4 weeks?
If you have ever been fingerprinted at any time by a police agency in Canada for an offence regardless of the outcome (including Not Guilty, Charges Dismissed, Charges Withdrawn, Peace Bond, Conditional Discharge, Unconditional Discharge, Sine Die Adjournment, or Probation), your fingerprints are on file and your application may take in excess of 120 days to process.
What is the difference between digital and ink-and-roll fingerprinting?
Digital fingerprinting uses electronic scanners to capture your fingerprints and transmit them directly to CCRTIS. Ink-and-roll is the traditional method using ink and paper cards. Both methods are accepted, but digital is typically faster and cleaner. We offer both services at our facility.
Do I need an appointment?

Do you provide card scan services for ink-and-roll prints to be submitted to the RCMP?

I would like to have my fingerprints and photographs removed from a law enforcement agency.
If you wish to remove your fingerprints from any law enforcement database, please follow the instructions on the RCMP website at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca. You may also conduct a self-serve police background check on our website and receive your results within 30 minutes to 72 hours.
Do you have the RCMP C-216C form?
Yes, we do. The electronic fingerprinting system has this form incorporated electronically in our system. For manual ink-and-roll fingerprinting, we use the same form for all countries except the United States.
Do you have the FBI FD-258 form?
Yes, we do. This is the only form used for ink-and-roll fingerprinting in the United States. We are authorized to conduct US ink-and-roll for FBI criminal background inquiries.
